Blu-Ray DVD information

The storage capacity of a Blu-Ray disc is 25GB, with the option of dual layer technology increasing the capacity to 50GB. There is also the hope of introducing multi (quad) layer discs holding up to 100GB. Blu-Ray DVD discs use blue-violet lasers, unlike the current red laser used for DVDs. Both formats use the blue laser (405nm) which has a shorter wavelength than the red laser (650nm) this gives the laser greater precision. This means that more data can be packed tightly on a disc giving much more capacity. Unlike the HD-DVD disc the Blu-Ray disc is a completely different format, the HD-DVD disc is of a similar structure to the current DVD disc.

The some of benifits of Blu-Ray over HDDVD would be things like the greater data capacity, the Playstation 3 using Blu-Ray technology and being able to play movies, movies and players will be optomised for 1080p from the outset, and the wider support from Studios and manufactures.
